Carolus Enckell (1945-2017) was born in Helsinki, Finland. He studied at Free Art School in Helsinki in 1966-1969 and later also taught there eventually serving as the school´s rector.
Enckell was a leading proponent of modern art in Finland. In particular, he was a master of color and light. Enckell described his approach as "pure experiential seeing," meaning that his work is not intended to be deciphered or understood, but instead it is meant to be felt and experienced with the senses.
Enckell was the Artist of the Year of the Helsinki Festival in 1990 and received a number of awards, including and the Carnegie Art Award in 2001 and Pro Finlandia Medal in 2009. He took part in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Finland and internationally beginning in 1968. A wide selection of his work can be found in various Nordic art museums, private collections and certain public spaces for which many were created.
